The theme for the 2012 District Conference ‘Accent on Youth’ – inspiring young people to do something new.

By the time of the Conference we will have already experienced the excitement of the Olympics and Paralympics on our soil and many legacy projects will have started with the aim of continuing the momentum towards the next Games. It is my goal with the support of Clubs across the District to use this unique opportunity through Rotary Service to help and channel aspirations of young people in our District into, or through sport, to achieve self-fulfilment in their lives.

However, it is not only about harnessing the empowering capability of sport it’s about inspiring youth to do something new.

Our keynote speaker during the day will be a famous sportswoman, television personality, model, enthusiastic charity worker, powerboat racer, author, interior designer and equestrian, to name but a few of her achievements, who has inspired many youngsters to follow in her footsteps. Who is she you may ask? Well you will have to come and see. The programme will also include other inspirational speakers and a chance to enjoy ourselves in the evening with a Dinner Dance to a popular East Anglia Pop band at Trinity Park.

As you will already know, ‘New Generations ‘is about working together, to provide opportunities for young people in our communities, both home and abroad, whatever their interests.

We will continue to support current RIBI Youth and Young Adult programmes in fact, the London 2012 Olympics Inspire Mark has been recently awarded to and added to the official posters for Young Photographer, Young Writer and Youth Speaks.

As we have said, the Conference is not just about sport, it’s about inspiring youngsters to do something rewarding, like becoming a volunteer, or teaching others new skills. In this regard we want to make further efforts at expanding Rotaract and Interact in our District and they will be invited to make a contribution at the Conference.

The Exhibition Area at the Conference will feature organisations and charities working and supporting youngsters and young adults locally and internationally. As one example we are discussing opportunities with WheelPower that provides wheelchair packages to give children with mobility problems the opportunity to participate in sport, some for the first time.

In addition, under Foundation, we are delighted to invite the Australian GSE Team from District 9800 which covers Victoria and a small portion of New South Wales to speak at Conference. We feel privileged and excited to work with such an outstanding Pilot District under Future Vision in this transition year.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away”

Let us take your breath away on 20th October 2012, the Conference Team and I look forward to welcoming you.
